Roulette explained: European vs American wheels and why it matters

Roulette remains a defining casino game because its rules are simple while the mathematics is not. The wheel you choose is the key variable: European roulette has 37 pockets (0–36), while American roulette has 38 (0, 00, 1–36). That single extra pocket changes the house edge, the expected loss over time, and how quickly variance can erode a bankroll. Understanding the wheel format lets you judge value before you place a single chip.

On a European wheel, most standard bets face a house edge of about 2.70%, because the zero creates the imbalance against even-money outcomes. On an American wheel, the 0 and 00 push the edge to about 5.26%, effectively doubling the cost of play for the same stake and betting pattern. For example, an even-money bet that would lose roughly £2.70 per £100 wagered in the long run on European roulette trends towards about £5.26 on American. Some tables add “La Partage” or “En Prison” rules on even-money bets, reducing the European edge further, but these are rule variations, not wheel types. If you are comparing options, prioritise a single-zero wheel, sensible limits, and clear rules; even a polished brand such as westace cannot change the underlying probabilities.

Industry context also matters: regulation, advertising standards, and player-protection debates influence what games and features are offered, and why.
